Here is what Australians actually need to know. ### What It Actually Is The Romantic Road is a designated scenic route, not a single road. It follows a combination of federal roads and state roads through 29 towns and cities in the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The name refers to the Romantic era (the 19th-century artistic and cultural movement) and to the region's medieval character — not to the concept of romantic relationships. ### The Highlights **Rothenburg ob der Tauber** — The iconic medieval walled town that appears on every Germany postcard. The preserved old town (*Altstadt*), with its half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and intact town walls, is extraordinary. It is also heavily touristic — visit early morning or evening to experience it without crowds. **Dinkelsbühl** — Less visited than Rothenburg but equally well-preserved medieval town. More authentic local character, fewer tour groups. **Augsburg** — Bavaria's oldest city (founded by the Romans), with impressive Renaissance architecture and significant German cultural history. The birthplace of Bertolt Brecht and the Fugger merchant family. **Neuschwanstein Castle (*Schloss Neuschwanstein*)** — The most famous castle in Germany — the model for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. Beautiful lake scenery. ### Practical Advice **Self-drive vs organised tour:** Self-drive is far superior for flexibility. The Romantic Road Coach (a bus service running the entire route in both directions, once daily) exists but limits your time at each stop significantly. **Timing:** Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) have the best balance of weather, colour, and fewer crowds than the peak July–August summer. **Day trip vs multi-day:** Würzburg to Füssen as a direct journey takes about 3.5 hours without stops. To see it properly, allow 3–5 days with overnight stays in Rothenburg and Füssen at minimum. **Combine with Munich:** Munich is an excellent base for Neuschwanstein (1.5 hours by car or regional train) and the southern section of the route.
