B2 is a serious commitment. Most learners need 18–24 months of study from zero, or 6–12 months with prior experience. Budget for lessons — self-study alone rarely gets people to B2.

Who needs B2?

  • German university entry — most German universities require B2 or C1 for degree programs taught in German
  • Skilled worker visa (Fachkräfteeinwanderung) — many regulated professions (nursing, engineering, law) require B2
  • Nursing/healthcare registration — the Approbation process for healthcare workers requires B2 minimum
  • Serious career changers — companies like Siemens, Bosch, and Deutsche Bahn list B2 as a requirement

What is tested?

Section Time What to expect
Listening (Hören) 40 min Three parts: monologues, radio feature, discussion. Detailed comprehension required.
Reading (Lesen) 80 min Longer texts — news articles, opinion pieces, technical documents. Multiple tasks.
Writing (Schreiben) 60 min Write a formal text (150+ words) responding to a stimulus — letter, essay, or comment.
Speaking (Sprechen) 15 min Individual presentation on a topic, then discussion with the examiner.

Where to sit it in Australia

B2 is only offered at the main Goethe-Institut centres:

  • Sydney — Goethe-Institut Sydney, 90 Ocean St, Woollahra — 4–6 sessions per year
  • Melbourne — Goethe-Institut Melbourne, 285 Punt Rd, South Yarra — 4–6 sessions per year
  • Online — Goethe offers an online proctored B2 exam — check goethe.de for current availability

B2 sessions are less frequent than A1/B1. Book as soon as registrations open — often 3+ months in advance.
