Should Australians Learn Swiss German or Standard German First?

📘 Share 𝕏 Tweet 💼 Share

If you're moving to Zürich vs Berlin, the answer is different.

For most Australians, the practical advice is to learn Standard German first, then pick up Swiss German vocabulary and listening skills once you're actually living in Switzerland.

Why Standard German first

Standard German has far more learning resources, exam pathways (Goethe, ÖSD) and transferability if your plans change to Germany or Austria.

When Swiss German makes sense to prioritise

If you already have a confirmed move to Switzerland, focusing listening practice on Swiss German early will help with day-to-day life faster, even while your reading and writing stay in Standard German.
